Advocacy Brief Builder

Craft persuasive, concise arguments backed by alignment with officials’ priorities and community values.

Start by identifying your decision-maker’s stated priorities—like public safety, economic growth, or constituent services—and tie your ask to those. For example, propose a recycling program that creates local jobs and reduces landfill costs. Use simple language: avoid jargon, lead with impact, and anchor facts in lived experience. A strong opening sentence states the problem, who it affects, and the solution you want them to support.

Structure testimony in three parts: personal story (30 seconds), data snapshot (30 seconds), and clear request (15 seconds). State how the bill aligns with existing laws or bipartisan efforts. Anticipate counterpoints—like cost or enforcement—and prepare concise responses using nonpartisan examples. Practice aloud to stay within time limits and keep tone respectful but urgent.

Map stakeholders early: list allies, neutral parties, and opponents, then identify who influences each. Build coalitions with groups that share values, even if their primary focus differs—like education or labor unions. Contact allies for letters or testimony, and offer to co-host a constituent briefing. Track engagement by date and channel, and always follow up with a thank-you note referencing specific contributions.
