PTSD & Trauma
Integrating trauma-informed medication strategies with safety planning to support stability without retraumatization.
Trauma affects the brain's stress response systems, sometimes causing persistent hyperarousal or emotional numbing—even years after the event. Medications don’t erase memories but can help regulate the body’s reaction to reminders. For example, certain medications may reduce nightmares, while others can ease overall anxiety and improve sleep. We tailor choices to your specific symptom profile and history of intolerance.
Safety is foundational—before starting any medication, we review current risks including suicidal ideation, self-harm, or unstable living situations. If needed, we help coordinate crisis support or safety planning *before* initiating pharmacotherapy. This ensures treatment doesn’t outpace your capacity to engage safely in care. Your safety plan is reviewed and updated at each follow-up.
We recognize that trauma survivors may be sensitive to side effects or feel anxious about medical procedures. Our sessions include time for questions, explanations of mechanisms (e.g., how a medication affects the amygdala or HPA axis), and pacing that respects your readiness. You decide when—and whether—to try an intervention. This process often builds trust that extends beyond the appointment.
