Investor Allocation Trends
How investor flows move across MBS segments using real-time footprints—not surveys—capturing behavior at the trade desk level.
Trading floor footprints reveal reallocation patterns between GSE agency MBS and private-label CMBS during volatility events. When spreads widen sharply, agency buyers often increase duration targeting via TBA, while CMBS buyers shift toward AAA tranches with shorter average lives. These footprints omit self-reported survey data and instead use anonymized order flow signatures.
Changes in allocation by investor type are clear in flow patterns: insurance companies typically increase CMBS AAA purchases in early quarters following large issuance windows, while REITs gravitate toward BBB tranches near quarter-end if they are rebalancing for leverage targets. The report identifies shifts in bid-to-cover ratios and settlement lags as early signals of capital reallocation.
Geographic flow diversification emerges in footprints too: as offshore demand weakens, domestic bank desks often step in to absorb inventory in specific MBS vintages, compressing yields in those pools. The review tracks footprints across major financial centers to map timing and volume of cross-border repricing events.
