Powertrain Specialist
A master technician with GM dealer experience rebuilt numerous transmissions, including complex automatic transmissions like ZF 8HP and GM 10R80 units.
Modern transmissions like the ZF 8HP and GM 10R80 integrate complex valve bodies, mechatronic units, and adaptive shift calibrations that go beyond simple fluid and filter service. These units require torque converter locking procedures, valve body calibration sequences, and transmission control module relearning after rebuild or replacement. A misaligned shift solenoid or incorrectly seated pressure control valve can cause harsh shifts or slippage despite perfect mechanical assembly.
Rebuilding these units demands adherence to OEM torque specs, cleanroom-level contamination control, and precise fluid fill procedures. For example, the 10R80 uses multiple independent pressure control solenoids and requires a specific fluid temperature range during adaptation—outside which the TCM will not learn correct shift points. This level of detail prevents premature wear, NVH complaints, or unexpected limp modes post-rebuild.
This work often involves diagnosing subtle clutch engagement issues, band slippage, or torque converter stall inconsistencies that only manifest under load or temperature extremes. Our approach combines bench dyno verification with road-load validation to ensure smooth engagement across the entire operating envelope, preserving drivetrain longevity and driver confidence.
