Applying Glaze Evenly
You will be able to apply glaze consistently using proper dipping, pouring, and brushing techniques.

Start with a clean, dust-free surface and ensure your piece is bisque-fired and completely dry. Dip the entire piece slowly and steadily into the glaze, rotating to coat all sides. Hold it submerged just long enough—usually 5–10 seconds—depending on the glaze thickness and porosity of the bisque.
Pour glaze into hollow forms, swirling to coat all interior surfaces, then pour out the excess. For brushing, use a quality brush and apply in the same direction with light pressure; avoid going back over wet areas. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next to prevent running or streaking.
Test your glaze thickness on a tile before committing to a final piece. Too thin may show the clay body or result in dullness; too thick can cause running, crawling, or pinholing. Adjust by adding water gradually to the glaze, stirring thoroughly, and retesting until the desired consistency is achieved.
Key points
- Keep surface clean and dry before glazing
- Dip or pour with consistent timing
- Test thickness on a sample tile first
