Loading Kilns for Even Firing
You will be able to position pieces in the kiln to promote uniform heat distribution and avoid glaze defects.

Place pieces on kiln shelves with adequate spacing—usually at least 1 inch between objects—to allow hot air to circulate freely. Stack pieces vertically only when absolutely necessary, and ensure each shelf has similar thermal mass. Use kiln wash or kiln paper on shelves to prevent sticking and protect the surface.
Avoid placing pieces directly against the kiln walls or heating elements, as this can cause overheating or uneven firing. Items facing the elements should be glazed on the bottom side only or placed upside down if possible. Keep glaze applications trimmed away from contact points like stems or foot rings.
Before firing, double-check for leftover moisture in greenware or underfired bisque, as trapped steam can explode pieces. Use a slow bisque cycle if pieces are still damp, and for glaze firings, follow a standard schedule that includes proper hold times and cooling phases to reduce thermal shock.
Key points
- Space pieces at least 1 inch apart
- Avoid contact with walls and elements
- Ensure pieces are fully dry before firing
