LCSWs with Psychiatric Liaison Training
Master’s-level clinicians with formal inpatient consult-team experience collaborating with psychiatrists.
LCSWs with psychiatric liaison training have completed supervised rotations or fellowships on inpatient psychiatric or medical-psychiatric units, where they participated in formal consult-liaison teams. Their training includes learning how to conduct psychiatric screenings, interpret psychiatric diagnoses, and support interdisciplinary care planning alongside psychiatrists and nurses.
These clinicians often serve as bridge providers between general medical hospitals and outpatient mental health settings. They may facilitate discharge planning, coordinate home health or partial hospitalization referrals, and provide psychoeducation to patients and families during acute care—ensuring smoother transitions and continuity of care.
When working with such an LCSW, expect collaborative brief interventions during medical admissions or follow-ups, as well as advocacy support to help navigate insurance or level-of-care decisions. They can also help clarify when outpatient therapy is appropriate versus when higher levels of care are indicated, based on clinical risk and functional capacity.
