Telehealth-Only Practitioners

State-licensed providers delivering cross-jurisdiction sessions where permitted under current scope rules.

Telehealth-only practitioners operate under individual state licensure compacts or temporary emergency exceptions where allowed. They must confirm eligibility for cross-state practice per each state’s psychology or psychiatry board guidelines, including informed consent about jurisdictional limitations and emergency response protocols.

These clinicians typically conduct assessments, therapy sessions, medication management, or combination visits remotely via HIPAA-compliant platforms. Availability may depend on provider residency status, but licensing documentation is verified prior to first appointment and updated as needed for compliance.

When choosing a telehealth-only provider, verify that they hold active licenses in both their own state and the patient’s state—or are operating under a recognized compact (e.g., PSYPACT for psychologists or compact medical licenses for psychiatrists). Also clarify what happens in crisis: they should have documented emergency procedures and know local resources.
