Tillamook Head, OR

Tillamook Head neighborhoods cling to lava-derived terraces and sea stacks, with homes sited on bedrock ledges well above mean high tide.

The geology here is basalt and sedimentary shelf rock, weathered into flat-topped benches and with minimal soil depth. Structures are anchored directly into bedrock using rock bolts and concrete piers that bypass unstable surficial deposits. Erosion rates are tracked by the Oregon Geological Survey, and new builds require geotechnical engineering reports showing seismic and slough resistance. All street grades exceed 12% in key stretches, with switchbacks designed for year-round storm drainage and mud control.

Public access to ocean bluffs is limited to a few coastal trails maintained by the state parks department. These provide views of sea stacks, tide pools, and seasonal whale migrations—but none connect directly to beaches during high tides or winter storms, when washover overtops the headland ridges. Beaches below are reachable only via private driveways on specific lots or via kayak at low tide.

Flood hazard maps show most of the headland lies within a high-risk flood zone, with additional designations for coastal erosion and tsunami risk. Every property has a mandatory evacuation plan, and most neighborhoods share radio frequencies for emergency alerts during winter gales. Power and internet rely on buried lines or microwave relays, as undersea cables only serve the southern valley, not the exposed western shelf.
