the Liminal Void

A folder of disjointed philosophical musings on the nature of existence, opened on the desk beneath the lamp. Liminality is a state of transition — a moment of in-betweenness where the familiar dissolves and new possibilities emerge.

The Nature of Liminality

Liminality is a state of transition, a moment of in-betweenness where the familiar dissolves and new possibilities emerge. It is the threshold separating the known from the unknown — the twilight realm where reality blurs and the impossible becomes tangible.

In liminal spaces, the rules that govern our everyday existence are suspended. Time seems to dilate and contract, linear progression giving way to recursive loops and tangential leaps. Space warps and folds in on itself, revealing hidden dimensions and impossible geometries. Causality becomes a tangled web of synchronicities and paradoxes.
  • Time Dilates

Linear progression gives way to recursive loops and tangential leaps.

  • Space Folds

Hidden dimensions and impossible geometries surface where a wall used to be.

  • Causality Tangles

Cause and effect knot into a web of synchronicities and paradoxes.

“Liminality is the realm of pure potential, where all things are possible and nothing is certain. It is the fertile void from which new forms and ideas can emerge, but also the chaotic abyss that threatens to unravel the fabric of the self.”

02 — the crossing

To Enter a Liminal State

To enter a liminal state is to surrender to ambiguity and embrace the disorientation of the uncanny. It requires a willingness to let go of fixed identities and preconceptions, to allow oneself to be unmade and reborn in the crucible of change.

The liminal is not a place of comfort or stability. It is an invitation — to explore the edges of what is, and of what could be.

  • Surrender to Ambiguity

Certainty is the first thing the threshold takes from you. Let it.

  • Embrace the Uncanny

Disorientation is not an error in the signal. It is the signal.

  • Unmade, Reborn

Fixed identities and preconceptions do not survive the crucible of change.

  • No Comfort Offered

Not stability — an invitation to the edges of what is and what could be.

03 — the survey

Mapping an Enigmatic Terrain

In our explorations of liminality, we seek to map the contours of this enigmatic terrain — to uncover the hidden patterns and possibilities that lie dormant within the folds of the real.

Three Instruments

Philosophy — to name the shape of the threshold.

Art — to show what naming cannot hold.

Direct experience — to stand in it and take notes.

Field Method

SURVEY SLIP / 0002 Objective: cultivate a way of being open to the transformative potential of the liminal — while maintaining a grounding anchor against its disorienting effects.

Openness without an anchor is not exploration; it is drift. Both hands stay on the rope.

Dormant Patterns

Hidden possibilities lie folded inside the real — in corridors, stairwells, the hour when the building is empty. We photograph them, transcribe them, and file them under this folder.

Where This Folder Sits

The philosophy folder is one object among many on the records-office desk. Everything else in the room is reachable from here — pages, prints, tapes, cassettes and the notebook of replies. The crate against the wall is still taped shut.

05 — the sign-off

Welcome, Fellow Liminal Traveler

Welcome to this strange and shifting landscape of ideas. May your journey through these spaces of betweenness unveil new horizons of insight and understanding.

The lamp stays on. The tape keeps turning. Read slowly, and mind the doorways.

“In liminality, all metamorphoses are possible.”
